The drive to get to Jack's 60th birthday party was one hell of a ride across the mountains (from the coast to inland) on unimproved roads. The distance looked short on the map, but the driving was hellatious! We made the party - but in the nick of time.
The second photo is a shot of Barb and I visiting Phil and Marie in 1978 when we returned from South Korea where I was with the 2nd Inf Div. It was a tough tour for both of us - the winter was as cold as the winter of 1950 when the "Chicoms" came through. Barb lived in Seoul with a lawyer and had to carry her own chamberpot.
While with Phil, we went out in the harbor on his sailboat for the day. The weather was cold and rainey, but touring Ketchikan and seeing all the sights (totems etc.) was fabulous.
I don't know who the little kid is that Marie is holding.
What a great time we had. Phil definitely resembles the pirate "Blackbeard".

I can definitely relate to chamber pots, living in the wood of Minnesota. I went up to visit Phil and Marie I think in 1967 after high school graduation and summer school at UND. Phil was going to summer school too. We drove back and hooked up with Marie in Alberta. I got to meet her family. Very nice. Then we all drove to Prince Rupert and took the ferry to Ketchikan. I got to climb Gold Mountain, and another one, can't remember the name. I saw the totems and the Ketchikan rain forest, very big trees. I had a wonderful time and want to thank both Phil and Marie for having me come up. It was great!
